Our New Issue & The State of The Magazine

We finally got our print issues from the printer and are hard at work shipping them all out for the holidays. This issue, more than any before it, was a true labor of love for us. We decided to do almost the entire issue in-house, meaning that we came up with each feature concept, writing, editing, recipe testing, photographs, illustrations, lettering, and design. Each piece fits better in the this issue than ever before, though, because we thoroughly went over and over each page in great, great detail before finalizing it. We really hope you enjoy this issue, and each kind word means so incredibly much to us here. In the spirit of Offscreen Magazine's transparent blog posts about their...

Why We Love Print

Both print and digital have their advantages and disadvantages. (Read our reasons for working in digital here!) Really, we keep a mix of both. Our print books consist of graphic novels, comics, old favorites, great quality printings of good books, really visual books, and books meant for the kitchen. We subscribe to a lot of mainstream magazines digitally, as well as keep reference books and audiobooks on our phones. Like DVDs vs. streaming services, there is definitely room for both. We want to make an impact with all that we do - from our design to our photos to our words and our mission. With that in mind, we’re looking to make a slight shift in how we publish. In 2016, we’ll be creating more focused, in-depth issues dedicated to single subjects. We want to go deeper and provide more knowledge and value for the people who know and love us. We want our issues to be a valuable reference, a source for inspiration, and most importantly,...

They're definitely gaining popularity, though, and we're really happy about it - we personally read through so many and spend a lot of down-time flipping through digital pages. They're almost like a mix between a blog & an e-book, but more timely. We've put a lot of work into our digital issues, so we thought we'd highlight our favorite things about online magazines to show you the light, if you're not already there. Anyone can use one With print issues of magazines, the costs and environmental impact of many magazines we love make buying them a bit prohibitive. Especially with smaller magazines that aren't in...

Why We Started Chickpea Magazine

At every in-person show we do, we hear the same set of questions again and again: why are you vegan? What is a small press magazine? And, appropriately enough for this post today, how did you get the idea to start something like this? Well, it really started from one place: the public library. Back when I still worked at a thrift store, from 2009-2011, I would go there after work at least once a week and read all the new magazines that would come out. I became fixated on page counts, monthly themes, editorial direction, and of course, the design of every issue. I always felt dissatisfied with mainstream magazines, and this steady stream of new issues really blew...
