It’s so interesting how each issue we put out is so different than just the one before it. We’ve worked with so many people, from all walks of life, that none of them end up quite like another one.

And even behind the scenes, how we change each season affects us deeply and only makes us better - every single issue, I believe that we get twice as good as we were before.

Nowhere is that more evident in the nuts & bolts of our operations. The first major change we ever went through was how we put the issues together. I used to design every single page in Photoshop (the only program I knew at the time), convert them to PDFs and string them all together to create one issue. It took SO LONG. No printer wanted to work with the level of my ability back then, haha. So I slowly learned Adobe InDesign, and I’ve only gotten better with time.

The same goes for how we ship issues, the language we use, how our website flows, the packaging we send out, how we work with contributors, and most importantly, how we print our issues. We still have changes to come - all incredibly positive. We’re switching to Wordpress from Shopify to better accommodate our upcoming online issue archives. (!!!) We’ve found good, sturdy, more sustainable packaging. Our workflow with emails has been steadily improving this year. 

And we finally, finally, finally found a printer we’re more than confident we’ll be sticking with. (Our “forever” printer.) We’ve switched printers probably over 10 times since we started - and every time we switch, it costs tons of time and money. Working with a new company means new standards, new relationships, extensive color quality tests, and much more. By sticking with this printer, and not having to switch, that means we’re saving money (aka paying our writers & photographers on time!) and especially saving on time, which means that we can once again get on a regular publishing timeline that’s sustainable for us.

You may not see it on the surface, especially if you’re new here, but since this is our entire life, it means so much for us. It gives us breathing room, peace of mind, and most of all, stability that we’re greatly in need of. It means our quality and content will only get better, and that we’ll be able to do more collaboration and experimenting with new ideas. And that makes us so happy.

AND we couldn’t be happier that all of this is happening during our WHOLE issue shipment - it’s by far one of my favorite designed issues I’ve ever made. The colors, textures, lettering, and of course content, all harmonize so well together. We really hope that you’ll enjoy this issue in print - I was nearly in tears when I got our first bound test copy in the mail.
